Copycat Egg McMuffin Recipe

What is it about McDonald's breakfast? Mike and I have both loved it since we were kids. It was such a special treat when mom or dad would load us in the car and order up a delicious Egg McMuffin from the drive through. Pure magic!

Fast forward (more years than we'd like to admit) and we still love these tasty, portable breakfast sandwiches. But at around $7.00 each for a Sausage McMuffin with egg, they can be expensive. Plus, stopping at the drive through before work isn't always the best use of time on a busy morning.

That's why we created this Copycat Egg McMuffin Recipe. You can make 6 of them for an all-in cost of $17, and still have leftover bacon and sausage. That saves you about $15 vs buying at the restaurant. Not to mention, they're just as tasty and you won't have to sit in line at the drive through to get one.

Our recipe starts with a 6 pack of Bays English Muffins. If their Original English Muffins aren't your thing, they have multiple different varieties, including Brioche, Multi-Grain, Sourdough and Cinnamon Raisin. We like Bays because their English Muffins are always fresh, pre-cut into halves and they come in a resealable package.

Next up is the protein. We like a little variety in our sandwiches, so we make both bacon and sausage. With bacon, there are a ton of different options. You can get it thick cut, peppered, fully cooked, microwave ready...the list goes on. You can even go non-pork and use turkey bacon or plant-based bacon. We just use the regular old $3.95 kind. It works for us.

As with the bacon, their are endless options for sausage patties. We use the Johnsonville Original Patties, but you can get chicken, turkey, plant-based, pre-cooked, brown-and-serve—you get the idea.

For this recipe, we like using the pre-sliced American cheese vs. Kraft Singles or something similar. Just seems to taste better. We've also experimented with Provolone, Pepper Jack and even cream cheese with great results.

The egg is probably the most difficult part of an already easy-to-make breakfast. The trick here is keeping your egg patties THIN. If you make them too thick, you'll heat up your sandwich in the microwave and everything will be warm and tasty until you bite into a frozen egg patty. (Ask us how we know, lol.)

We use a pan designed specifically for cooking egg patties. It cooks 4 eggs at a time and they're exactly the right thickness for our sandwiches. If you don't have an egg pan, you can use silicone egg rings that sit right on your frying pan or even a greased ring from a large canning lid.

After assembly, we put each sandwich in its own Ziploc sandwich bag, so we can grab one quickly in the morning. Reheating is super easy. Just remove the sandwich from the bag, wrap in a paper towel and pop in the microwave for 1-2 minutes until heated through and enjoy!

What we like about this Copycat Egg McMuffin Recipe!

Nicole - A warm breakfast (and a hot coffee) are a great way to start your engine on a cold winter morning. These breakfast freezer sandwiches are super easy to make, extremely tasty, and come in just under 350 calories, so your waistline will feel just as good as your tastebuds.
Mike - I love breakfast. Sure, a yogurt cup or a hard boiled egg will do, but if I had time, I'd make a gourmet breakfast every morning. This Copycat Egg McMuffin recipe gives you the feeling of a home cooked breakfast platter, with the convenience of a sandwich you can just pop in the microwave.

    • Crack an egg into each circle and add salt and pepper to taste.

    • Cook each egg until the whites are set and the yolk is cooked to your preference, usually about 3-4 minutes.

    • Remove each egg from the pan and let cool slightly.

Tips and Tricks

  • There are literally dozens of different varieties of bacon. You can choose from thick cut, thin cut, flavored, pre-cooked, microwave, etc. We just use the cheap stuff. It cooks up crispy and tastes great every time.

  • We like Bays Original English Muffins because they're always fresh, they're pre-cut into halves and they come in a resealable package.

  • Different types of cheese can really change the flavor of your sandwich. Don't be afraid to try different varieties like gouda, pepper jack, sharp cheddar and others.

  • If you're going to make this recipe regularly, or you have a large family, get a non-stick egg pan. This handy kitchen tool allows you to cook four perfect eggs at once to save you time.

  • Make sure your egg patties are not too thick. If you make too large a patty, it won't cook at the same rate as the other ingredients and you'll bite into a warm sandwich with a frozen egg patty.
